“Unfiltered Truths About Parenting” Seminar Held

22.05.2026

The “Unfiltered Truths About Parenting” seminar, organized by the Early Childhood Education Department of the Faculty of Educational Sciences at Istanbul Medeniyet University, was held on Wednesday, May 20, 2025, in the Blue Hall of the Central Classroom Building.

The seminar, held as part of the Early Childhood Parenting School, was attended by prospective preschool teachers and parents. Featuring Serap Otlu, Senior Coordinator of the Basic Education Directorate at the Türkiye Maarif Foundation, as the speaker, the seminar addressed the unseen aspects of the parenting experience in the digital age.

Throughout the seminar, attention was drawn to the fact that the “perfect parenting” posts frequently encountered on social media do not always reflect real life. Noting that such content can foster feelings of inadequacy, guilt, and a constant sense of falling short among parents, Otlu emphasized that parenting is not an idealized performance but rather a process-driven experience that is learned, allows for mistakes, and evolves over time.

Conducted in an interactive format, the seminar provided participants with the opportunity to share their own experiences, while also offering recommendations on establishing healthy communication with children, developing balanced relationships, and helping parents set more realistic expectations for themselves.

The event, which also drew significant interest from pre-service preschool teachers, concluded with a question-and-answer session where participants’ questions were addressed.
