“Rare Works Conference 2024” Held in our University

The “Rare Works Conference” (NEK 2024) was organized by Istanbul Medeniyet University Library and Documentation Department to address innovative approaches that will shape the future of university libraries and to ensure the preservation, digitization and inclusion of rare works in academic research.

The conference, organized in cooperation with Istanbul University Library and Documentation Department and under the coordination of Istanbul Medeniyet University Information and Document Management Department, was held on December 19, 2024 with the theme of “Rare is Valuable”. Our Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Yaşar Bülbül, Kadıköy District National Education Director Tahir Uygur, our Secretary General Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ekrem Tak, our University staff and students attended the event held in our Central Library.

The program began with the opening speech of our Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Yaşar Bülbül. In his speech, Prof. Dr. Bülbül emphasized that university libraries are not only access points to information, but also undertake an important responsibility such as protecting cultural heritage and passing it on to future generations, and he emphasized the importance of studies on digitizing and preserving rare works. He drew attention to the contributions of innovative approaches in this field to the academic world.

Following the opening speech, academics and professionals who are experts in their fields shared their experiences and knowledge on cataloguing, digitizing and making accessible rare works. In addition, the roles of libraries and archives in preserving these works and current practices in Turkey were discussed in detail.

At the event, presentations were made by expert speakers on the current status of rare artifacts, protection methods and digitalization processes. The conference continued with great interest from students and academics, and offered rich content with suggestions and exchanges of ideas for the inclusion of rare artifacts in scientific studies.

At the end of the program, participants were introduced to a special selection of rare works exhibited in our library.
